Families’ Weekend

We held our first ever Families’ Weekend in April 2023 and due to its success we held the second one in June 2024.

This residential event is for families who have a child or young person who is growing up living with HIV, or for adults who themselves grew up living with HIV and now have their own family. It’s a chance for families to come together in a safe, supported space for a weekend retreat in the countryside where they can:

  • Meet other families living with HIV
  • Explore family communication together
  • Dedicated activities for children, young people and parents/carers
  • Dedicated creche space and activity programme for under 8’s
  • Activities for all the family

Upcoming Events
Our next Families’ Weekend will take place from 2nd-5th April 2025. Please do keep an eye on this page and follow us on social media to hear when applications open.

Reflections from our latest Families’ Weekend

Read more about our 2024 weekend as Chiva Associate Angelina Namiba shares her thoughts. One parent said, “This was our first time connecting with other families with HIV. We found it so enjoyable and as a family we benefited so much from our time here. Thank you so much!”

Previous Events

Family conference

From 2018 – 2022, Chiva ran an annual Family Conference for parents and carers of a young person growing up living with HIV, and young adults who have grown up living with HIV. It was a safe space where participants could:

  • Attend sessions exploring family communication and HIV
  • Hear from the Chiva Youth Committee and other young people about their experiences of growing up with HIV
  • Hear what young people living with HIV need from their family members
  • Hear from other parents and carers perspectives, plus attend specialist workshops exploring topics such as positive parenting techniques, understanding the impact of bereavement, and self-care.

There are currently no plans to hold another Families’ Conference.
